About Professor Ashraf M. Salama
Global conversations on architectural education, sustainable urbanism, and the future of the built environment are becoming increasingly important as institutions and professionals seek innovative approaches to teaching, research, and practice in a rapidly changing world.
Building on these critical conversations, Professor Ashraf M. Salama, Professor of Architecture and Urbanism and Head of the School of Architecture and the Built Environment at Northumbria University, will join the SACAP Education Conference as an International Speaker at the Beattie Building, University of Cape Town (UCT) on 10-11 September 2026.
A globally recognised scholar and leader in architectural education, Professor Salama brings decades of international academic, research, and professional experience spanning the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and North America. His participation will provide delegates with valuable global perspectives on architectural pedagogy, sustainable urbanism, research-led education, and the evolving role of architectural institutions in shaping future cities and communities.
His address will explore the transformation of architectural education in the context of global change, innovation in the built environment, and the importance of creating inclusive, sustainable, and future-focused learning environments.
About Professor Ashraf M. Salama
Professor Ashraf M. Salama is Professor of Architecture and Urbanism and Head of the School of Architecture and the Built Environment at Northumbria University at Newcastle.
He serves as Co-Director of the Architectural Education Commission of the International Union of Architects (UIA) and has chaired four schools of architecture across Egypt, Qatar, and the United Kingdom over a distinguished 25-year career.
Professor Salama holds an honorary professorship at Universiti Putra Malaysia and has held tenured and visiting academic appointments across nine countries. He was educated at Al Azhar University in Egypt and North Carolina State University in the United States.
A leading voice in architectural pedagogy and sustainable urbanism, Professor Salama has secured more than £2.5 million in research funding and published over 250 academic outputs, including 18 books, more than 130 peer-reviewed journal articles, and over 40 book chapters focusing on architectural education, urbanism, and the assessment of designed environments.
